The story is simple enough: Edna Pontellier, wife of a New Orleans businessman and mother of two, is aimlessly dissatisfied with her role as society wife. On a holiday on Grand Isle, something in her is swayed by the music of a pianist and the company of a young man. Experiencing a modicum of independence, she yearns for more. Upon her return home, she embarks upon a series of actions—social and sexual—that lead to fleeting moments of fulfillment and an unfortunate end. Beautifully written, Chopin’s once scorned tale of liberation has become an acknowledged classic in the century since her death. It certainly deserves that status.
I was shook by this book as a young woman - it really made me vigilant about anyone seeing my life as small - I feared the overwhelming feelings of pointlessness, even worthlessness that made this woman walk into the water...
This is my #1 book of all time! Beautifully written and daring to speak the truth, it captures the essential paradox of women's lives: Family and motherhood or creativity and passion. The fact that this is on the list makes me trust you. 100%
