In this first of seven Madeline tales written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans, our heroine, a French charmer whose special blend of moxie and mischief wins the hearts of all who meet her, proves her mettle. Madeline and her world— including Pepito (the boy next door), the dog Genevieve, Miss Clavel, and Lord Cucuface, to say nothing of the books’ grandest character, the city of Paris!—can’t help but occupy a child’s imagination in ways that foster resourcefulness and good cheer. Bemelmans’s light-handed drawings and lighthearted verse make this 1939 book and its sequels memorable pleasures, particularly in their original large formats. Wonderful for reading aloud as early—and often—as possible.
Thorughly agree in that, as a parent, I read these books to my three daughters and always experienced a sense of the author's careful touch describing what is now a bygone Paris
