In James Bond, who made his first appearance in 1953’s Casino Royale, Ian Fleming created a fictional character who would—courtesy of the fabulous global success of the Bond film franchise in the 1960s and beyond—outgrow his modest literary origins to become an icon of modern masculinity. From Russia with Love, the fifth of Fleming’s Bond adventures, perfectly conveys the panache of his hero, who is blunt enough to blunder into danger but always sharp enough to find a way out. Taking place largely in Istanbul and on the Orient Express, it details a plot by SMERSH (the Soviet counterintelligence agency) to kill Bond as the first gambit in an elaborate scheme to discredit the British Secret Service at large.
Other than "Casino Royale", "From Russia with Love" might be Ian Fleming's best entry in the James Bond series.
