At age fifty-eight, suffering from a heart condition, John Steinbeck took to the road to say goodbye to the country he loved and to engage one more time with the American themes his imagination had brought to life in his fiction. Travels with Charley is his account of the trip, which took him from New York to Maine to the Pacific Northwest, down the coast to his hometown of Salinas, California, then back east along the southern route. There is much nostalgia in these pages for a time when life was decidedly local and place was as powerful a determinant of character as mass media or governmental bureaucracy...Yet Steinbeck’s interest in people and their passions and his keen eye for scenic beauties and social truths infuses his journey with an autumnal sense of satisfaction and grateful joy, making Travels with Charley this master’s most companionable—and beloved—book.
I have returned to this one many times. Wonderful portrait of a bygone era.
