What happens when sixteen heirs named in paper magnate Sam Westing’s will are installed in apartments in the same building, organized into unlikely pairs, and tasked with solving the mystery of Westing’s murder? They—and we—learn a lot about love, companionship, loyalty, and the real source of happiness. Darren Raymar, the principal of the Covert School in Rockville Centre, NY, fell in love with The Westing Game when his 5th grade teacher read the book aloud to his class at the end of the school day. He, in turn, read it to his 4th grade classes when he was a teacher, and he continues to urge people to read it today. Darren was runner-up in our Virtual Battle of the Books with Rockville Centre Public Library on November 12, 2020, so he’ll get another chance to go for the win when Battle of the Books returns to RVCPL.
Rarely does a classroom full of seventh graders devour and delight in a book, this one not only captivated all of us, I still remember it incredibly fondly nearly 15 years later.
