Rebecca Myers made her case for Erik Larson’s The Splendid and the Vile in our fourth Battle of the Books with Byrd’s Books of Bethel, CT on October 21, 2020. The book, which chronicles in depth Winston Churchill’s first year as prime minister of England, “allows us to see Churchill as he was seen by his family and friends and by the people he was determined to defend, who responded to his relentless hope even as he helped them face the realities of an all but hopeless situation.” Reading Larson’s book, Myers felt encouraged to “buck up and carry on,” and she believes we can all draw strength and inspiration from the voices of the people who did so under Churchill’s leadership in another time that so dramatically tried people’s souls.

A fascinating account of Churchill's first year as Prime Minister as seen through the eyes of those around him. The characters truly come to life and you will want to keep reading even if you already know what happens next.
