The circle of life and friendship simplified in handful of pages. Yes, its a bit melancholy. But it shines with a sweetness and honesty that is perfect for children. I saw this performed as a play when I was in elementary school and story of the boy/tree has never left me since that day. It says so much with so little.

I openly weep every time I read "The Giving Tree." Every time. This beautifully minimal book can be read on multiple levels. Might the tree represent a parent, a friend, or (as I read it) a Christlike figure that never stops offering love?
