Inspired by the fusty, antiquarian glories of his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft composed this short novel—which did not see publication until 1943, six years after his death—around the legend of a haunted mansion just a couple of blocks from his own dwelling place at the time of writing. It’s set in the year 1918, when an impetuous and self-serving fellow named Charles Dexter Ward gets curious about his colonial-era ancestor Joseph Curwen. Curwen’s reputation for eternal youth, grave robbing, and experiments with monsters provokes his descendant to unwisely proceed with a resurrection of his wizardly forebear. As the reader might surmise, this is not a Good Idea.
An Interesting story, but I thought it was a little too nightmarish for me to read again.
