"Peace Like a River" is easily one of the finest novels I have ever read. It is brimming with piercing insights into the human condition and a rare delight in the English language. I have a feeling that Enger has read more than a little Wodehouse along the way.
"Peace Like a River" is kind of a cowboy story/Western novel and yet...not really. Very difficult to summarize in a few words the warp and woof of Enger's book. No matter. The author's prose will win you over every time.
Many quotes from this book made it into my commonplace book. Here are just a couple:
“Sometimes heroism is nothing more than patience, curiosity, and a refusal to panic.”
“It is one thing to say you're at war with this whole world and stick your chest out believing it, but when the world shows up with it's crushing numbers and its predatory knowledge, it is another thing completely.”
