Count Alexander Rostov is a convicted aristocrat, but because of some revolutionary poetry he wrote as a student (or did he?), he is sentenced not to death, but to spend the rest of his life in the Metropol hotel. This book teems with interesting characters, with insights into Russian history and the human spirit, and with episodes that will make you laugh or cry. A book to read and reread - perfectly plotted, and every page is a delight. My copy is bristling with post-it flags because the writing is simple but so perfect.
Rebecca Myers won our virtual Battle of the Books with Byrd's Books of Bethel, CT on July 14, 2020 with her advocacy for A Gentleman in Moscow. "After enduing the past several months of isolation and uncertainty [due to the impact of COVID-19], I've found even more to delight me, more to relate to, than when I first met Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov several years ago. This is a story for the ages, but most pertinent right now, when we have all had our lives disrupted and face a future very different from what we supposed it would be. . . . I hope you will discover this marvelous man for yourselves. At the very least, you'll be entertained, but I suspect you will find a new friend as I have—and perhaps a a mentor—in Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov."
